Teacher finally convicted for raping girl (11)

IT took more than three years but Nkosingiphile Hlekwayo, a teacher from Empangeni, has finally been convicted and sentenced to three terms of life imprisonment by the Empangeni Regional Court for repeatedly raping an 11-year-old girl.

Hlekwayo, a teacher at Mzuvukile Primary School, was found guilty after the magistrate heard how he repeatedly and violently raped the Grade 6 pupil in Nseleni township.

SA Police Service spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said the accused had raped the victim on three separate occasions, causing severe physical and emotional damage.

“The victim told her parents what had happened and a case was opened at the Empangeni police station on August 5, 2009.”

The Empangeni Family, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit took over the investigation and arrested the man on the same day that the offence was reported.

“It is alleged the family of the accused heard that he was arrested, they approached the parents of the victim and promised to pay them money or give cattle if they withdrew the case against the accused.”

Naicker said the victim’s parents refused to withdraw the case and had received death threats shortly after.

He said taking the girl to a place of safety until the case was finalised was a reaction to the death threats.

Attempts to make contact with the family were unsuccessful.
