Teacher found dead in flat

A VELDENVLEI Primary School teacher, described as humble and good with children, was found dead in her flat with bruises on her neck and a swollen face on Tuesday morning.

Laurette Pillay (42) of Kingfisher Creek complex was found by Veldenvlei Primary School principal Vivian Raubenheimer and the owner of her flat, Dr Terrence Kelly, after they were alerted that she had not been in contact with anyone.

“All the teachers arrive at school at 7.15 am and when she did not arrive on time we phoned her, but she did not answer,” said Raubenheimer.

“We contacted her relatives who did not know what had happened to her.

“I walked to her flat and found her pastor at the gate. He was also worried as she hada not attended her prayer meeting at 5 am that day.”

The pastor and other church members then approached the caretaker, Frans Potgieter, to ask if they could gain access to her flat.

Potgieter called Kelly and the two broke into the locked home.

“The house was in pristine condition [and] when we called for her there was no response,” said Potgieter. Kelly and Potgieter found an unconscious Pillay lying on the bedroom floor.

“Her face was beaten beyond recognition,” he said.

Emergency services were alerted and they supervised Kelly by telephone to perform CPR to resuscitate her.

After 20 minutes, medical personnel arrived and declared Pillay dead.

Potgieter said Pillay had been living at the complex for about four months

Richards Bay police spokesperson Captain Debbie Ferreira said the cause of death “still needs to be determined”.

She said that given the sensitive nature of the case, it was being thoroughly investigated before police released any information and that no one had yet been named as a suspect.

Pillay leaves a teenage son.
