Teacher stabbed to death

2014-04-23 00:00

A TEACHER at Willowfountain has died after she was allegedly stabbed and assaulted with a TV set by a close relative.

Simangele Angelina Latha-Zondi (44) was found in her bedroom with stab wounds.

The relative handed himself over to police.

A neighbour, Simangele Mastery, told The Witness that she had not heard any sounds indicating a fight coming from Latha-Zondi’s home.

“I only noticed the blue lights in the yard and I went over to see what was happening as Mama Zondi was not responding to my call back messages as she always did,” said Mastery.

She said she realised something was wrong when she saw police vans and ambulances in the yard.

“Police told me not to enter as it was a crime scene. But later they told me what happened and asked me to take the children so that they wouldn’t see the body of their mother being taken away,” she sobbed. She added that she was surprised to see the relative in handcuffs being shoved into the police van.

A source told The Witness that Latha-Zondi was stabbed and that a plasma TV was also used to assault her.

Nomfundo Latha said her aunt was a down-to-earth person.

“She was a secretive person who did not want us to know what was going on in her home, although she had reported [the relative] to the police for abuse,” said Latha.

She added her aunt had recently started teaching at Bhekuximba High School.

Police spokesperson Captain Musa Ntombela said they are investigating a murder case and a man had been arrested.
