Teachers' salary deductions: Education Dept extends period

2008-04-03 00:00

THE Education Department has decided to extend from four to six months — ending in September now — the period over which it deducts from teachers’ salaries to cover last year’s strike period.

Eliam Biyela of the National Teachers’ Union said the decision will ease the monthly burden on teachers, but said he is disappointed his union was not included in discussions.

The Witness understands that the department changed its mind about the deduction after a meeting with the SA Democratic Teachers’ Union, which had threatened to strike over the deductions.
