Teaching them while they’re young

2013-12-11 00:00

IT was a historic event they wanted their children to share.

So a Canadian family who live in Pietermaritzburg left in the early hours, braving wet and misty roads to arrive at Johannesburg’s FNB stadium for Nelson Mandela’s memorial service.

Andrew and Karen Suderman and their two children, Samantha (three) and five-month-old James, sat high in the stands. “We’ve been living in South Africa since 2009. We feel South African, and so we felt it was important to be here,” said Andrew.

Karen said they love to travel. “Everywhere we go in the country we can see how the scars of apartheid are beginning to fade. It’s unbelievable. We’ll teach the children about Mandela when they are older.”
