Team formed to probe possible serial killings

2008-01-31 00:00

Police have officially announced the establishment of a task team in Pietermaritzburg to investigate the possibility that a serial killer could be active in the area.

The Witness reported on Monday that there are indications that a serial killer may be responsible for the murders of at least three unidentified women.

Their bodies were found near the N3 highway last year.

The team — six experienced detectives under the command of Senior Superintendent Gops Govender — will also examine previous cases alleged to have been the work of a serial killer.

A serial killer and rapist — dubbed by police at the time as the Sleepy Hollow killer — was sought in the Pietermaritzburg and midlands areas in the late 1990s.

Senior Superintendent Henry Budhram issued a press statement yesterday announcing the establishment of the task team in view of “similarities” in the recent cases.

“The investigation will consider all evidence obtained thus far and the modus operandi … ”

Police have asked anyone with any information that could help police inquiries to contact Senior Superintendent Govender on 082 779 7141 or Inspector Frans Bezuidenhout at 073 1994 132.
