Team of Choice: Striker Sibisi commits to three-year deal with Maritzburg side

MARITZBURG United have taken a step in the right direction in trying to bulk up their squad ahead of the upcoming PSL season by signing striker Diyo Sibisi on a three-year deal yesterday.

The 29-year-old spent last season on loan at Harry Gwala from Ajax Cape Town. He was instrumental in Ian Palmer’s Team of Choice avoiding relegation and scored 11 league goals during the season, making him the club’s highest scorer in last term’s PSL.

Maritzburg had made attempts to secure a permanent deal with Sibisi after last season ended, but the initial Ajax asking price of R1 million was too much for the club.

“Since then we have been in constant negotiations with Ajax and we are pleased to announce that we have come to a settlement,” said Maritzburg chairperson Farouk Kadodia. “We are not prepared to disclose the price of the player at this stage.”

Kadodia said that the arrival of Sibisi in Pietermaritzburg would be a boost for everyone involved at the club.

“He brings with him a wealth of experience and he will have a great influence on the youngsters in the squad,” he said.

Sibisi is believed to be happy to have signed on at the club as it brings him closer to his family, who are based in Ladysmith.

Meanwhile, negotiations between Maritzburg and Orlando Pirates over the services of attacking midfielder and striker Rudolf Bester are still ongoing. Maritzburg had hoped that a deal would be finalised yesterday, but Kadodia confirmed that an unforeseen delay had crept into the process.
