Team of Choice to host Bucs in Nedbank semi-finals

2014-04-15 00:00

MARITZBURG United will host Orlando Pirates at Harry Gwala Stadium in the semi-finals of the Nedbank Cup, it was confirmed yesterday.

While a date for the fixture is yet to be confirmed, the first weekend of next month appears likeliest.

Wits will travel to Kaizer Chiefs in the other semi-final, with most of the country now eyeing a Soweto derby between Chiefs and Pirates in the final.

But United under coach Steve Komphela are a formidable force, having scored in every match that they have played this year to move away from the relegation zone.

“It is something huge for the city, the club and the supporters,” United chairperson Farouk Kadodia told The Witness after yesterday’s draw.

Kadodia added it was important that the match stay at Harry Gwala, and not be moved to a bigger stadium like Moses Mabhida.

On his side’s chances of going the distance in the competition, Kadodia was optimistic.

“We have often been a side that is fighting relegation, so it is good that now we have gotten past those worries this season and we can focus on the cup,” he said.

The draw means that Maritzburgers are likely to have two of the country’s biggest clubs at Harry Gwala within a week, as title-chasing Mamelodi Sundowns will travel to the Team of Choice on the final day of the season on May 10.

United won’t have to wait long to get a closer look at their semi-final opponents. The squad flew to Johannesburg yesterday, and they will take on Pirates in a largely insignificant PSL clash at Orlando Stadium. With Bucs out of the title race and United safe from relegation, log position is all that there is left to play for, and Komphela’s charges do still have a small chance of finishing the season in the top half.

The match kicks off at 7.30 pm and will be televised on SuperSport Four.
