Team of choice appeals to the municipality for funding

2009-09-11 00:00

MARITZBURG United Football Club (MUFC) is in need of financial assistance for the current season and has requested funding from the Msunduzi Municipality.

In a written request tabled at a recent executive committee (Exco) meeting, MUFC chairman Farook Kadodia said: “We strongly believe that the MUFC brand has contributed immensely in improving and exposing the Pietermaritzburg brand as a city, just as we have benefited hugely from council through this association.”

He went on to say that because the team is without a title sponsor, they are faced with a major financial challenge in meeting the operational responsibilities that come with running the team.

“Council support financially therefore brings a huge relief to the running of the club,” said Kadodia.

He said the city would see a return on the investment as many of their Premier Soccer League (PSL) matches would be televised live.

“… if it is a home game, Pietermariztburg as a city, has a share in the TV coverage, which would otherwise cost an arm and a leg to purchase,” said Kadodia.

The request, which amounts to R1,5 million, will be used to cover transport, marketing and security expenses.

ANC councillor Themba Zungu said the request should not be approved as yet because MUFC has benefited from council funds in the past and it is unfair for council to support one team and leave others out.

Exco decided to stand the item down until a meeting is convened between representatives from MUFC, various sporting fraternities, Exco members and relevant officials in order to establish what assistance could be given.
