Team to advise on king statue

2010-06-17 00:00

THE KZN government has named the team of historians, academics and members of the royal house appointed to advise on the new airport’s King Shaka statue.

They are:

Professor Jabulani Maphalala — former history professor and Zulu cultural expert.

Jabulani Sithole — University of Natal history lecturer, author and co-editor of the book Zulu Identities: Being Zulu Past and Present.

Dr Vusi Shongwe — head of the Heritage Directorate in the Premier’s office.

Dr Brian Thusi — of the Office of the Premier.

Reverend Mnculwane Vikinduku — from the KZN Provincial Adminstration.

Mkhohliseni Mdletshe — praise singer.

Representatives of the Zulu Royal family are Princes Mbonisi, Thulane and Zebulon.

The original statue, created at a cost of R3 million, was removed earlier this month after a growing swell of discontent, first voiced by King Goodwill Zwelithini, that it is not an appropriate representation of King Shaka,

Acording to reports, Professor Maphalala said he is baffled that the statue has been modelled on the features of the late film star Henry Cele, who played the role of the king in the film Shaka Zulu.

The task team held its first meeting last Monday at the Linduzulu Palace in Nongoma. They have a month to complete their brief.

When the statue was being dismantled, Premier Zweli Mkhize said the reworked statue will be erected on a more prominent site at the airport. Mkhize added that he wants to see more features covering every aspect of Shaka’s life and that the new statue might be larger.
