Technology sees Ballito surf contest go global

2013-06-07 00:00

GONE are the days of packing a picnic basket and shunting off to the beach to catch the wave-riding action in a big contest. Technology now allows you to catch the action with a click of a mouse.

Ballito hosts the SAP prime-rated Mr Price Pro Ballito from July 1 to July 7 and with an improved webcast, offers worldwide access this year.

The event has its own exclusive Mr Price Pro Ballito channel on You Tube, allowing fans to catch the action in high definition via a secure fibre optic line dedicated to the event. Webcast producer Greg Kitto says: “We have made small but significant changes this year to ensure a high standard webcast is delivered to fans across the globe.”

Viewers will enjoy a multifaceted experience of the action, with six camera angles plus two slow-motion cameras providing the best moments on the water. An HD point of view ghost camera allows for broadcasting from the water, the event being the first in South Africa to offer this facility.

Such technology allows viewers to catch every moment of every ride, with behind-the-scenes coverage of contestants providing their experiences and predictions for the day.

ASP World Championship Tour anchor Joe Trupel provides endless insight from the commentary box. He provides insight on board selection, information on surfers and statistics, and leaves nothing undone in bringing the event’s story together.

If people cannot catch the event live, the webcast starts each morning with a 40-minute show looking back on and wrapping up the previous day’s highlights while previewing what lies ahead. No matter where in the world people may be or what time zone they are in, a highlights package running through the night allows up-to-date action and information.

Graham Daniel, the event director said: “This is the event’s fifth year on the shores of Ballito and we are privileged to broadcast and showcase one of the world’s premier surfing contests to the world.”

The event also incorporates the Mr Price Pro Ballito Beach Festival, free music concerts from July 4 to July 6 and a wine festival from July 2 to July 4.
