Teen drowns in lagoon

IN yet another South Coast drowning, a 16-year-old boy from Mfazazana near Hibberdene lost his life in the lagoon on Mfazazana beach on Sunday.

His name is yet to be released.

He had been in the company of friends who had tried to pull him out of the water once he started showing signs of struggling, but they were unable to do so.

Warrant Officer Francois Pretorius f the SA Police F orce search-and-rescue division was quickly on the scene and was able to recover the boy’s body.

SAPF spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid said the drowning happened at around 3.30 pm. “There are always children jumping off that bridge and playing in the water so that might have been what was happening. An inquest docket has been opened and an investigation is ongoing.”

Three people have drowned on the South Coast during February. Only two bodies have been found.
