Teen needs bike to fulfil dream of riding in world championships

2010-07-27 00:00

JAKE Smith, a 19-year-old former Carter High pupil who was bitten by the BMX racing bug at the age of seven, is having financial problems ahead of the 2010 UCI BMX World Championships to be held in Pietermaritzburg from Thursday.

Being brought up by a single parent has not made it easy for Smith to participate comfortably because of financial constraints.

His problems began in 2008 when his bike was stolen at the Liberty Midlands Mall.

Although his friend has offered to loan him a bike so that he can represent South Africa in the BMX world championship, Smith has never been able move past the fact that his bike was stolen.

“Without a BMX of my own, I cannot carry on with my cycling career,” he said. “I started when I was seven years old, with help from my mum and grandmother.”

He has raced in five SA championships, and even serious injuries have not kept him away from the sport.

“I need someone to sponsor me with a bike, helmet, kit and a bit of money for registration,” said Smith.

He said he needs his own bike, as his next big challenge is to qualify for the 2012 Olympics.

His mother, Ann Smith, said: “Jake has an unbelievable passion for BMX racing. He has kept his spirit high from when I entered him in his first race in 1999,” she said. “He has never given up, even when my financial situation did not allow for his participation.”
