THE teenage mother of a baby then four months old, who alleges she was raped at knifepoint, sexually assaulted and robbed by Faizel Sayed, recognised him walking in town after she was discharged from hospital and called police, the high court heard yesterday.

Sayed was subseqently arrested.

The woman, who broke down in tears while describing her ordeal in the high court in Pietermaritzburg, testified that when she saw Sayed he was wearing a red jacket he had stolen from her at the time of the rape in June last year.

After raping her repeatedly in the forest near Liberty Midlands Mall, she said, Sayed left her to go and relieve himself. She said he took her T-shirt, skirt, shoes and jacket with him and told her she should wait for his return.

“I was afraid he would kill me or rape me again,” she said.

The young woman said she fled in her bra and panties until she reached the N3 highway where she stopped a car. A family of four stopped to help her and gave her clothes to wear. They then drove her to police where she laid a rape charge.

The young woman, who was almost 18 at the time, told Acting Judge Ben van Heerden and two assessors that she was admitted to hospital for three days for the treatment of internal injuries.

When she arrived at the police station she “could not sit down because of the pain”.

She told the court she walked with Sayed and a young girl from town after Sayed offered her a job in a shop in the mall.

They left the other girl behind in the forest and Sayed produced a knife and threatened her. He held the knife aloft in his clenched fist and said he would stab her when she refused to comply with his demands.

The woman said she begged him not to rape her but he did so, twice. “I told him I have a four-month-old baby,” she said.

On two occasions he assaulted her by forcing his hand into her vagina, forced her to perform oral sex, and also took indecent photographs of her with his cellphone.

At one stage he answered a call and she heard him use the name “Faizel”, she said.

The woman said that when she cried with pain he told her he’d had “sex with a 10-year-old girl and she didn’t cry”.

Sayed (35) has alleged that he had sex by consent with the woman, as well as seven other adolescents and young women he is charged with having raped between April and June last year.

He has pleaded not guilty to the murder and rape of nine-year-old Nombuso Nhlangulela who went missing on February 28 last year and was found suffocated to death on March 3 in Howick.
