Teenaged killer could be rehabilitated — judge

2013-08-15 00:00

AN 18-year-old youth who betrayed the trust of his employer — Chinese shop owner Meimei Wang (34) — by taking part in her brutal murder and robbery at Umzimkhulu on June 17, was jailed effectively for 20 years yesterday.

Acting Judge Madlala Xolo decided not to impose life imprisonment on Tshidiso Rampesi of the Matatiele area because of his young age and the fact that he pleaded guilty, which gave hope that he could be rehabilitated.

However, the judge said Wang’s murder by Rampesi and two accomplices had involved extreme brutality and callousness.

She was strangled, assaulted with a gas cylinder and sustained 25 incised stab wounds.

The judge said the stab wounds entered her heart and liver, and she did not have a chance of surviving.

It was also disturbing that Rampesi betrayed her trust. He was employed by her as a security guard to protect her and her property. Instead, he had provided vital information to outsiders, and took part in her robbery and murder. He also provided the knife used to stab Wang.
