Teenager killed in horror accident on way to matric dance

2011-10-01 00:00

TWO teenagers died in accidents near Durban last night, paramedics reported.

One of the boys was reportedly on his way to his matric farewell dance.

In an accident on the M7 near the Hans Dettman Highway, a teenager who had been thrown from his cousin’s vehicle was run over by a truck whose driver apparently did not see the boy’s body in the road.

Vanessa Jackson of ER24 said an off-duty paramedic spotted the 23-year-old driver trying to flag down help and stopped.

The man had lost control of his Corsa Lite, which rolled several times, ejecting his 17-year-old cousin, who was spotted lying motionless in the road about 25 metres from the vehicle.

As the paramedic was about to step into the road to assess the boy’s condition, a truck drove over the body. The driver seemed unaware of what had just happened and drove on, Jackson reported.

The boy had sustained extensive injuries and was declared dead at the scene. It is not clear whether the fatal injuries were caused by the first accident or by the truck.

The cousin was in a severe state of shock but not injured.

In the other accident a matric pupil died in a side impact accident in the Folweni area while driving to a farewell dance.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said another pupil was critically injured while two others suffered minor injuries.

In Limpopo last week, six pupils returning from a matric function in two vehicles died when a car and a taxi crashed head-on.
