Telemachus to coach KZN provincial squad

KWAZULU-NATAL Cricket has welcomed Roger Telemachus to its ranks as coach of the KZN provincial team.

The former Cobras, Eagles and South African one-day player — he played 37 ODIs and three T20s — joined the union earlier this week in a contract extending to the end of April next year.

Considered unlucky to be in his prime as a quick bowler when South Africa had a surplus of talent in that department, Telemachus brings a wealth of experience to the union, something the youngsters in the provincial team will be keen to feed off.

Said Jesse Chelin, CEO of KZNCU, “We welcome Roger to Durban and look forward to his developing and nurturing the budding talent we have. Through working closely with head coach Lance Klusener, we hope he will instil a winning and fighting culture in the team.”

Telemachus was surprised at being chosen for the job, but said he was happy to be in Durban. “My selection is a pleasant surprise, but I am happy to be part of the operation. I have always had a goal to coach at senior level and starting in the system at amateur level has its own challenges. It’s the right place to start, as it prepares you for the next steps up the ladder. I’m up for what lies ahead and look forward to working with some great young talent,” he said.

Telemachus has wasted no time slotting into the setup. His team is currently involved in a three-day clash against Border at the Chatsworth Oval which started yesterday and there is also a one-day match, against the same opposition, on 28 October.
