Tembu Royals’ future hangs in balance after AmaZulu complaint

2013-03-14 00:00

MARITZBURG United’s Nedbank Cup game against Tembu Royals has been thrown into doubt after AmaZulu laid a complaint that could see the Eastern Cape side thrown out of the competition.

Tembu Royals beat AmaZulu 2-1 at the King Zwelithini Stadium in Durban last month to set up a last-16 clash with United.

But, Usuthu claimed the Eastern Cape Safa Regional League side used an ineligible player and asked the PSL to investigate.

Advocate Ntsietso Mofokeng yesterday told The Witness that AmaZulu were contesting the eligibility of Tembu Royals’ Zukisa Ginya, who was alleged to have registered with an ID that did not belong to him.

Should Royals be found guilty, that would see Usuthu return to the cup in which a cup fixture against United would lie in wait.

The matter was referred to Safa Arbitration and is due to be heard today, said Mofokeng, adding that Royals’ game against United was still set for Sunday.

Maritzburg United’s commercial manager Younus Kadodia said they were still preparing themselves for the game on Sunday.

“If they are found guilty, the fixture will be affected,” he added.

Speaking to The Witness, Royals’ general manager Litha Gqokoma said: “The boy is from East London. He came to us with his ID at the beginning of the season and he was registered. We were surprised at this complaint after the game against AmaZulu because he has played in every game for us in the league,” Gqokoma said. “We are also the victims here.”

AmaZulu spokesperson Philani Mabaso said they lodged the complaint with the PSL after receiving reports from the Eastern Cape that the player had been playing with false identification.

When Mabaso was asked if they hoped to be reinstated into the competition, he said: “At the moment we are not hoping for anything. We are just waiting for the PSL to conclude their investigation.”

PSL spokesperson Lux Mantambo would not comment on what would happen should Royals be found guilty.

“At the moment, we do not want to pre-empt anything. As the PSL, we are waiting for the investigation to be concluded,” was all he would say.

Meanwhile, Maritzburg defender Mohammed Awal was called up to the Ghana squad for their World Cup qualifier against Sudan, in Kumasi.

The Team of Choice’s biokineticist Burger van der Merwe told The Witness that Heinrich Isaacks had resumed training following an injury. “The decision on whether he plays on Sunday will be made by the coach,” said Van Der Merwe.

There was worry over defender Peter Petersen who picked up a slight knock, but Van Der Merwe was confident that he will have overcome it ahead of Sunday.

United will, however, be without Dutchman Orlando Smeekes, who will be out until the end of the month.
