Temple disputes resolved

2009-04-02 00:00

Strict membership requirements at the historic Siva Soobramoniar and Marriamen Temples in Langalibalele Street, which have been the subject of endless disputes, have finally been resolved.

Representatives of both the Temple Committee and concerned devotees have been locked in a series of meetings. Both groupings issued a joint statement to say they have reached an amicable resolution in the interest of the temples and the devotees.

The agreement allows for an update of membership statistics as well as a window period for new membership applications. All new applications will be finalised before the next Annual General Meeting is held. The Priest at the temple, who recently found himself caught up in the spat, recently applied for an interim interdict against senior officials. As a result of the mediation his application has fallen away. The negotiating team was made up of temple officials Anton Dorasamy, Thumbie Padayachee, Prega Padayachee and Seggie Naidoo. The concerned devotees were represented by Willie Naidoo, Sandra Bridgemohan and Mervin Govender.

Both groups have pledged to work together to ensure that the ambience of the temples is restored, particularly during the forthcoming fire-walking festival over the Easter weekend.
