Tender appeals tribunal launched

2012-11-07 00:00

THE MEC for Finance, Ina Cronje, yesterday outlined several measures to fight corruption and announced the launch of a tender appeals tribunal through which decisions about tenders and bids could be challenged.

Meeting the Melmoth business, community and religious leaders for a pre-budget business breakfast in the town hall, Cronje appealed to businessmen “not to be partners in corruption”.

She suggested that municipalities use some of the extended public works programme funding to solve the problem of potholes.

People could be trained to maintain the roads, she said.

Education and health would get the biggest slice of the KZN 2012/13 Budget — 41,6% and 31,8% respectively.

In a thorough and wide-ranging presentation that dealt with the full spectrum of economics — from the global economy through to the methodology the KZN Treasury employed in formulating the Budget — Cronje highlighted the problem of inequality in South Africa.

“You cannot fight poverty with a gun; you can only fight it with economic growth,” she said.

“Investment and infrastructure are the best way to grow your economy because without them you cannot have growth.”
