Tendulkar’s ton wasn’t enough

MUMBAI — Kochi Tuskers Kerala stunned the Mumbai Indians by eight wickets at the Wankhede Stadium, as they chased down their target of 183 with an over to spare yesterday.

Kochi’s incredible win was set up beautifully by the experienced duo of skipper Mahela Jayawardene (56 off 35 balls) and the belligerent Brendon McCullum, who plundered 81 off 60 balls.

They added a sensational 128 for the first wicket — and though Jayawardene was given a life on 14 by a sprawling Ali Murtaza — they showed remarkably cool heads in chasing down the Indians’daunting total.

McCullum was brutal on Lasith Malinga, lashing the Sri Lankan for four boundaries in the third over to get the innings rollicking.

Jayawardene was cleaned up a yorker by Malinga, which saw Ravindra Jadeja coming in and taking his team home.

A wonderful, maiden IPL hundred for Sachin Tendulkar had seen Mumbai rack up 182 for 2 in their 20 overs, with the Indian megastar reaching his milestone off the last ball of the innings.

He had added 116 for the second wicket with Ambati Rayudu, who clubbed a 33-ball 53 before sacrificing his wicket to allow Tendulkar to get his hundred in the last over.

Tendulkar had taken 43 balls to reach his half-century, but he then blazed his next 50 runs off only 23 balls. — Supersport.com
