Tennis tour an experience to remember

2014-07-22 00:00

FROM the grass courts of Wimbledon to the red clay of Barcelona. That’s a quick description of the recent tennis tour by Kearsney College’s first team.

Touring the UK and Spain, the highlight was undoubtedly the two days at Wimbledon. Here the boys saw Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Maria Sharapova on court, while also getting glimpses of Eugenie Bouchard, Milos Rainoc, Serena Williams, Alize Cornet and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

On court themselves, the Kearsney boys played three matches in the UK. They lost 16-8 to Millfield and 14-10 to Sutton Academy, but tasted success with 15-4 against Dulwich College.

In Spain, they spent five days at the Andres Gimeno Tennis Centre in Barcelona, plying their expertise on clay under Spanish coaches.

They also played two matches, beating the Polo Club 15-6 and the Egara Club 18-2.

In between, there was sightseeing, which included a visit to the unfinished temple of architect Antoni Gaudi and the spectacular beaches.

It was the fifth overseas tour by Kearsney in the past 19 years. They toured the UK and U.S. in 1995, the UK, Austria and Germany in 1999, Australia in 2003 and England/France in 2007.

Touring team: Keegan Foss (capt), Dale Sandy, Benjamin Patton, Neil Lillelund, James Stromnes, Matthew Bentley, Brad Porteous, Mihir Singh, Brendan Bosman, Nic de Beer, Thomas Hart, Kyle Koenig, Luke Hawyes, Patrick McGrath, Samuel Stanton, Grant Manderson.
