Terblanche in familiar position of fullback for Witbank clash

2010-09-09 00:00

STEFAN Terblanche, the Sharks captain and centre, has been switched back to his old position of fullback for tomorrow night’s Currie Cup match against the Pumas in Witbank.

The veteran Terblanche has taken over from the injured Louis Ludik at fullback, with Andries Strauss now joined by Riaan Swanepoel in the midfield.

Also sidelined by injury is flank Keegan Daniel, but number eight Ryan Kankowski, returning from Springbok duty, is a ready-made replacement.

The front row is again disrupted with prop Beast Mtawarira and Bismarck du Plessis, both in the Springbok conditioning squad, unavailable for selection.

Coach John Plumtree will field a new front row of props Eugene van Staden and Pat Cilliers with Craig Burden at hooker.

Monty Dumond, who played fullback against the Bulls, drops out of the squad and tighthead prop Wiehahn Herbst is on the bench.

Plumtree has bracketed backs Ludik and Luzuko Vulindlu together on the bench.

“With Louis Ludik doubtful because of injury, it wasn’t fair to wait until the final captain’s practice tomorrow [Thursday] for selection. I wanted to name a starting 15 and will then make the adjustment on the bench after the practice.

“Stefan at fullback will give us real go-forward ball on the counter and his experience is obviously important.

“Centres Swannie [Swanepoel] and Andries [Strauss] have been in good form and the backs are playing some good rugby.”

Plumtree said the loss of loose forward Daniels, who has been “in great form”, was a major blow in the match against the Bulls.

“But we are lucky to have Ryan Kankowski back and I’m looking for a real big performance from him in Witbank.”

He said the loss of Bismarck du Plessis and the Beast, and the injury to Jannie du Plessis, have left the Sharks pack lighter than the Pumas.

“But Patric Cilliers has done some good work on his conditioning over the last couple of weeks and he has played some good club rugby for Rovers. He’ll be pretty hungry to impress me and I wanted to see what Eugene van Staden can bring to tight-head.”

Lourens van der Merwe will referee the match, which kicks off at 7.10 pm tomorrow (SS1).
