Thanda retain 7 players for next season

SEVERAL former AmaZulu players are likely to form the core of a Thanda Royal Zulu squad that will carry the hopes of KwaZulu-Natal in the National First Division (NFD) in the upcoming season.

After Durban-based Nathi Lions were sold to a Gauteng tycoon, Thanda remain the only team that will campaign in the NFD.

Apart from signing experienced campaigner in attacking midfielder Joseph Mthombeni from the University of Pretoria, new Thanda coach Neil Tovey has invited defensive midfielder Bafo Biyela, right-back Smanga Biyela and winger Sthembiso Dlamini for assessment.

They join striker Dumisani Ngwenya, Litha Ngxabi and two Kaizer Chiefs youngsters who have signed on a season-long loan.

The arrival of the aforementioned players sees the release of seven, including the former Orlando Pirates duo of marksman Phumudzo Manezhe and defender Edward Malinga.

Only seven players from the last team that failed in their bid to gain promotion have been retained. These are Asanda Mvalo, Lucky Mzizi, Nkosinathi Ogle, Peter Wadabwa, Khumbulani Mdluli and Sipho Made.

With goalkeepers Oscar Ramogoadi and Dikutu Tikempe having been shown the door, Thanda have secured AmaZulu and SA U23 keeper Nhlanhla Makhathini on a season-long loan and are assessing former Free State Stars keeper Brilliant Khuzwayo.

Tovey said that he is expecting an exciting campaign with the new League regulation forcing clubs to field five U23 players.
