‘The Event’ is here

2010-09-29 00:00

THE Event, a new television series which has had American critics talking and guessing since it went into production last year, debuts on M-Net tonight at 9.30 pm — just nine days after its debut on NBC in the United States.

M-Net’s Pierre Cloete said they were able to broadcast the series just over a week after the U.S. broadcast thanks to new broadcast technology which allowed the channel to acquire HD files through a state-of-the-art delivery service.

According to NBC Universal, the show has been bought by almost 200 territories around the world, including South Africa. “The pace at which broadcasters are licensing the series is extraordinary,” said international television distribution president Belinda Menendez.

The Event is a conspiracy thriller that tells the story of everyman Sean Walker (Jason Ritter), who, as he investigates the mysterious disappearance of his would-be fiancée, Leila (Sarah Roemer), from a cruise ship, unwittingly exposes the biggest cover-up in U.S. history.

The show also stars Laura Innes as Sophia Maguire, the leader of a mysterious group of detainees, who is due to be released by President Elias Martinez (Blair Underwood), despite the disapproval of his director of National Intelligence, Blake Sterling (Željko Ivanek ).
