The Perry charm lost on avid followers

2010-10-04 00:00

MY word, what a clever title for a sequel — but, unfortunately, it takes more than just a clever title to make a good movie.

I am a huge fan of Tyler Perry’s films, predictable as they are. Usually after watching one of his films for the first time, I’m always left thinking, well done, Mr Perry, you really took your time to create a quality product.

This time I have a very different opinion.

Perry, the poster-boy for black film, is becoming too comfortable with the fact that he has established a following and, like many others before him, has put together a crappy film knowing very well that his following will spend their hard- earned cash to see.

The storyline goes as follows: a group of couples go on holiday to the Bahamas; they fight, they try to fix their fights, and they fight about that too.

This is the same formula that Perry used for his first movie and it worked very well.

This time around, the director-slash-writer-slash-actor and his cast (which includes Janet Jackson, Jill Scott and the super-hot Michael Jai White) just did not bring in the way they did before.

Maybe the pearly-white sand and crystal-blue waters made them just a little too relaxed to do so. I personally feel that Perry was just looking for an excuse to visit the Caribbean — why not kill two birds with one stone?

Whatever the case, as a big Tyler Perry fan, I am very disappointed.

What a waste of such a clever title.
