The big swim

2012-02-11 00:00

A MOTHER and her nine-year-old triplets from Salt Rock, who are competing in their third aQuelle Midmar Mile as a family, say they were inspired to do the race because it has become a family tradition.

Janine Tully said her daughters Olivia, Meagan and Jemma naturally gravitated towards the event.

“We swim as a family and the girls got used to me competing in the event. So it was a natural progression for them, but I do admit that I might have influenced them a bit,” said Tully.

According to race organisers, the girls are currently the youngest competitors in the race and Tully said that there are a lot of frayed nerves in the household leading up to the event.

“The girls get very nervous before the race, but once they are finished there is a big sense of accomplishment and achievement. They love to take their medals to school to show them off,” said Tully.

The fact that the girls and Tully start at the same time helps to settle some of the nerves.

Tully is competing in the over 30 category, which starts at the same time as the U14. “Last year we started the race together and two of the girls swam away and I finished with the one. Soon they will want to do their own thing,” she said.

Tully added that although the girls had a tough training regime with former triathlete Dominique Donner, they do not have any ambitions to win their age group.

“They want to finish with a better time than they did last year so that they can get a better starting position next year,” she said.
