The false teeth notice that went viral

2011-02-01 00:00

CAPE TOWN — The Internet is a popular platform for jokes and spurious notices.

One of the latest jokes doing the rounds on the Internet is a photo of a staff notice stuck to a door advising workers at the Kraaifontein branch of Checkers to wear their teeth.

The staff notice announced that workers must arrive for work with their teeth from October 27.

Those who don’t have teeth must submit proof that they are in the process of getting a false set.

“Checkers do not have a branch in Kraaifontein,” said communication official for Shoprite Checkers, Sarita van Wyk.

According to Van Wyk the firm is aware of the spoof staff announcement doing the rounds, but there is nothing it can do to stop it.

Van Wyk said the joke was for a short while displayed for its humour on a notice board at Checkers’ branch in Big Bay and put up only at this branch after internal arrangements.

It was there that someone had photographed it, after which the joke went viral. The notice has meanwhile been taken down.

Internet observers say such incidents show why news will be around for a long time.

“Because the Internet is not answereable to anyone, users have to verify each claim for themselves,” said Petru Kruger, an independent systems analyst in Pretoria.
