The potential for tourism in PMB ‘is huge’

2014-05-06 00:00

THE potential for tourism in Pietermaritzburg “is huge”, director of Msunduzi Pietermaritzburg Tourism, Dumisani Mhlongo, said yesterday.

He was interviewed telephonically after Msunduzi Pietermaritzburg Tourism’s meeting last month of the Local Tourism Forum, the first of its kind in the city. Represented were individual and organisational stakeholders such as Midababa, Midlands Tourist Guiding Association, Liberation Heritage Route project and others.

At the meeting, the chairperson of Msunduzi Economic Development Committee, Eunice Majola, expressed concern about the lack of bed and breakfasts in areas outside the city. Mhlongo said the two-and-a-half-year-old Msunduzi Pietermaritzburg Tourism — formed out of the merger of two organisations — was in discussion with various tourism and event-related companies to try and get accurate statistics on the number of people who visit the city.

He said the municipality was making headway in improving the city centre, which was an important asset if one wanted to attract tourists, while Safe City had also done much to curb crime in the city centre.
