The sky is no limit: local paraplegic makes ‘awesome’ tandem jump

2011-05-09 00:00

THIRTY-YEAR-OLD Pietermaritzburg paraplegic Jene Frost’s disability has given her a greater appreciation of what living is all about and the opportunity to skydive at the weekend was a chance to show just what she can do.

“Awesome” was how she later described the tandem jump.

The only scary part was being in the doorway of the light aircraft at 10 000 feet above the ground looking down. Luckily there was almost no time to think before she was airborne, she said.

Frost, who has been in a wheelchair since a freak motorcycle accident on a farm at Donnybrook 15 years ago, was brimming with excitement ahead of her jump on Saturday, as she listened to the final briefing given by her tandem skydive instructor, Vernon Kloppers of Durban Skydive Centre at Angels Way farm in Eston.

Frost, a sports lover who excelled at long-distance running at school before her accident, told The Witness she dreams of being able to participate in sport again, particularly cycling.

“There are handcycles available for paraplegics but they are incredibly expensive … I think they cost around R50 000, “ said Frost.

Frost said that if any company or individual is prepared to sponsor her she would be delighted.

“I’d be happy to take part in any adventurous challenge to raise funds,” she said. Anyone who would like to sponsor her in an “extreme challenge” can e-mail her at
