The tornado that never was: watersprout stirs up Durban

2011-02-03 00:00

A WATERSPOUT over Durban has become a talking point after a webvideo of the phenomenon was posted on the East Coast Radio website.

Filmed on Monday afternoon, the footage clearly shows the twister funnel coming down from dark cloud.

The woman who filmed the waterspout, whose name ECR was unable to provide , says in an incredulous voice: “It’s January 31, and there’s a tornado … in Durban.

“It’s quite a big one. It’s moving quite nicely.”

She describes feeling the wind starting up.

Lucky Makhwedzha, forecaster for the SA Weather Office, said that waterspouts are often confused with tornados as they have similar features, including a funnel extending from a dark rotating cloud.

He said the wind generated could be felt for one to two kilometres.

“They only occur over the ocean in spring and summer.

“They usually dissipate when they get near to land and it’s more common to see them out at sea.”

Makhwedzha said they can pose a danger to small boats if they touch down.

“They are not very common.

“You will see one or two in two years,” he said,”
