Thefts out of cars in CBD: Four arrests

2013-08-01 00:00

THE police have arrested four men they believe could be linked to 20 incidents of thefts out of vehicles in the Pietermaritzburg CBD.

Spokesperson Joey Jeevan said the Pietermaritzburg Cluster Tracking Team, with the assistance of detectives at SAPS Pietermaritzburg, arrested the men — Siphamandla Khoza (27), Andile Shezi (24), Siphamandla Basi (23) and a 17-year-old — at a beerhall in Retief Street.

Further investigation led the officers to the Esogodini area in Plessislaer, where they recovered two guns in rooms rented by two of the men. The guns were stolen from vehicles in June and July.

The men are thought to be responsible for thefts out of vehicles in Langalibalele, Chief Albert Luthuli, Church, and Greyling streets, and Victoria Road. They are suspected of stealing clothing, personal documents, jewellery, cash, cellphones and electronic equipment valued at about R100 000 from the vehicles they broke into.

The four, who are in custody, will apply for bail at the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court today.

Further arrests are expected, said Jeevan.
