There’s gold in those Gallops

2011-10-15 00:00

A RANGE of quality thoroughbreds were paraded at the prestigious Ready To Run Gallops at Summerhill in the Midlands yesterday in a one-of-a kind South African event of international importance.

The horses, which were worked or cantered for prospective buyers, will be sold at an auction on November 6 in Johannesburg at the Bloodstock South Africa sales complex.

The R2 million race, which is restricted to graduates of the sale, is the third richest race in South Africa (and Africa) in terms of stakes or prize money earned. Each of the first 10 horses that pass the winning post on November 6 will earn a cheque in terms of where they finish.

Rated as the premier source of major race performers and champion thoroughbreds, the Gallops concept was initiated about 20 years ago in South Africa by Summerhill near Mooi River. Summerhill has been ranked a champion breeder for the seventh year in succession.

A host of key stakeholders at the event included the headline sponsor Emperors Palace (sponsor of the sale and race), Bloodstock South Africa (sales and auction company), breeders and the main vendor Summerhill Stud (host of the Gallops), Phumelela Racing and Gaming and various owners and trainers.

Nine industry panellists, including champion trainer Mike de Kock, were on hand to rate and judge the horses’ work. They submitted their top three colts and top three fillies.

Summerhill CEO Mick Goss was praised for the event, which attracted international breeders and buyers.
