Thief chose the wrong thing to steal: CCTV crew’s tools

2014-05-30 00:00

YOU can run, but you can’t hide, from the eye in the sky.

One flatfooted thief in the city must now be kicking himself after realising too late that he should have picked another target.

Lucas Holtzhausen of Pietermaritzburg’s Safe City initiative couldn’t help chuckling yesterday as he told The Witness how they had nabbed a thief who unwittingly stole from the Safe City crew themselves.

Holtzhausen said the Safe City technicians were busy working on a camera in the city centre when an opportunistic thief opened the canopy of their bakkie and whipped their toolbox out, running down the road with it.

“But he misjudged our techies’ tenacity.”

Holtzhausen said they called in the police and had a look at the CCTV footage in the area, spotting the thief on the cameras.

“We recovered all the tools inside the taxi rank. One suspect was identified on our cameras and was arrested. This man really picked on the wrong guy,” laughed Holtzhausen.
