Thief out on bail busted with laptop

2014-01-31 00:00

THE laptop thief has been nabbed and it’s been discovered he was out on bail for other alleged crimes when he went on his thieving spree.

Police said the man (24), wanted for the theft of electronic devices from government department staff, was arrested and will appear in court soon.

Police said the footage supplied by the Department of Rural Development and Land Reform in Pietermaritzburg had helped them identify the man. He was arrested at a house in Sobantu.

Police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said it is alleged that on January 23 security guards at the department recovered a laptop bag containing an official laptop, a Samsung Galaxy cellphone, an iPad and a portable HDD TV from the man, who allegedly took them from one of the managers’ offices.

At the check-out, he was stopped and questioned by the security guards, but managed to give them the slip when he was allowed to go out for a cigarette break.

Naicker said the suspect is currently appearing in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court on two cases of fraud.

The provincial commissioner of police in KwaZulu-Natal, Lieutenant-General Mmamonnye Ngobeni, praised the Pietermaritzburg Tracking Team for arresting the alleged criminal. “It does remain a concern to police that criminals continue to commit crimes even while on bail. We will ensure that this man finally pays for his crime spree so that he cannot continue to steal from innocent citizens,” she said.
