This is not the end of the power crisis — Eskom

2008-05-02 00:00

An Eskom spokesman said yesterday that they had maintained from the outset that load shedding was not their preferred option to reach the 10% savings target.

“Eskom has thus been monitoring the situation for tangible indications that the target is within reach. We believe that the contributions already made by industry and many municipalities indicate that as a nation we are on the road to meeting our power savings objective …”

The spokesman warned that although some efficiencies had been achieved, the system “remains tight”. “Should additional stress on the system be experienced and load shedding be required, we would revert to existing schedules and inform consumers as soon as possible.”

He denied that Eskom was bowing to political pressure related to the proposed tariff hike.

He said it would not be appropriate to label this suspension as the beginning or end of any particular phase in the power crisis.
