This month's art courses at Macs

2009-05-05 00:00

MANDALAS, Memories and Magic Circles is the title of a course hosted by Jutta Faulds at Macs House on Wednesdays from 9 am to noon and on Fridays from 5.30 pm to 7 pm.

Mandalas, at the most basic level, are designs based on the circle, which is what the word actually means in Sanskrit, the ancient Indian language.

“The circle is a universal symbol which spans cultures and religions, often used to represent completeness, peace and eternity,” Faulds explains. “Circles are not pointing in any direction, nor are they going anywhere. The mandala takes these concepts further and makes it the central focus on which to build thoughts and become grounded.”

Faulds said participants would be encouraged to make their own mandalas: “People will discover a wide range of creative techniques, none of them skill-related, all of them contemplative and indeed soothing to the stressed out brain. The purpose is to look inwards — a change in this day and age.

“Creating a mandala is a truly personal activity, with no right or wrong way of doing it. It is a journey rather than a destination.”

Participants should take along pencils, ball pens, fine liners, koki pens, etc. Admission to the Wednesday courses in May is R340 (Macs members) and R395 (non-Macs members) for four sessions. Those attending the Friday classes in May pay R240 (Macs members) and R295 (non members) for four sessions.
