Thousands apply for 40 city vacancies

2009-10-27 00:00

THE desperate need for employment in the city was exposed yesterday when hundreds of people showed up to compete for a mere 40 job opportunities advertised by the new Boxer store in Berg Street. An estimated 1 000 people delivered their employment applications.

The Boxer store will be launched at the end of November.

The crowd of predominantly young applicants packed the area in front of the store where their applications were dropped off. Most seemed despondent about their chances as they saw the number of applicants grow.

One of the applicants, who did not want to be named, said he had travelled from Howick after hearing about the possible employment at the store.

When he saw the hordes of other applicants, he changed his mind sand decided to approach the management directly.

“I am looking for employment as a forklift operator,” he said. “I have 13 years of experience in that area and that is why I believe I stand a better chance of getting the job if I approach the management directly.”

Another applicant, Andile Nxele from the KwaDindi area said he also heard about the job through the grapevine and had arrived at 6 am to submit his application.

“I am currently unemployed, therefore, I am just looking for any job that I can get,” he said.

Sandile Nxele, the assistant training manager at the store, said the store was looking for only 42 temporary staff members locally as their objective is to invest back into the community.

“With the exception of managerial positions, all the new employees will be from Pietermaritzburg as that is part of our community development initiative.”
