Three bodies, one murder charge

A MINIBUS taxi rank manager in Empangeni has been charged with the murder of a young Durban woman whose partly decomposed body was found in a bush behind the rank.

Mbongiseni Mtambo (27) of Mtunzini on the north coast was initially held for questioning last week in connection with the murders of three women who were aged 25, 27 and 37.

Their partly decomposed bodies were discovered in different areas of Empangeni during the past fortnight.

It is understood they were strangled to death and there are suspicions that they were also raped.

Police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said Mtambo has so far been charged only with the murder of 27-year-old Jabu Langa of uMlazi in Durban.

Zwane said Langa’s body was discovered on August 17.

He said she last had contact with her relatives on August 13. On that day she had left Durban to visit her relative in Ntambanana near Empangeni.

“In Empangeni she phoned her relatives in Ntambanana to inform them that she had run out of transport to continue with her journey.

“She also told them that there was a man following her around offering to help her find transport, but she was suspicious of him.

Then on Tuesday her body was discovered,” said Zwane.

Zwane said Mtambo yesterday appeared at the Empangeni Magistrate’s Court on a murder charge.

“His case was postponed to August 30 for bail application,” said Zwane.

He said police are also investigating an allegation that Langa was raped before being murdered.
