Three-day challenge: WP in command against KZN Inland

2010-10-29 00:00

IT was a tough day at the office for KZN Inland on day one of the Provincial Three-Day Challenge match against Western Province at Newlands in Cape Town yesterday.

In the aftermath of a punishing day in the field, Inland trail WP by 306 runs with eight wickets remaining.

In reply to Province’s 367 for four in their 85 first-innings overs, Inland were 61 for two at stumps.

Winning the toss did Inland no favours, as WP opening batsman Martin Walters hit an unbeaten 180 including 22 fours and a six, and featured in a 200-run partnership for the third wicket with captain Dominic Telo who helped himself to 96.

“The guys didn’t bowl badly, Western Province just batted well and played good shots all around the wicket,” said Inland coach Doug Watson.

In the late afternoon, Inland lost opener Mario Olivier to the fourth ball of the innings, while near the end it was Cheslyn Nhlapo’s turn to edge to second slip Alistair Gray as the WP front men threw everything at the visitors.

“They came out firing, got decent pace and we will have to fight hard in the batting,” Watson said.
