Three in court for ‘hit’

2012-10-27 00:00

ZODWA Khulu (41) from Newlands West, Bongani Mbili (26) from Umlazi and alleged “hit man” Phumlani Mkhize (23) from Pietermaritzburg made a brief appearance at the Verulam Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

They were charged with conspiracy to murder Nomonde Dlamini (27), Khulu’s sister-in-law from Newlands West.

It is alleged that Khulu saw Dlamini as an obstacle to gaining total ownership of the estate owned by the latter.

Dlamini and her brother are the beneficiaries to the estate, which they inherited after their parent’s death.

Khulu is alleged to have wanted Dlamini dead so that she and her fiancé, who happened to be Dlamini’s brother, could gain sole ownership of the estate.

It is believed that Khulu and Mbili are related, and Mkhize was paid to do the killing.

Dlamini’s parents passed away in 2006, leaving a five bedroom house and a Mitsubishi Colt bakkie to her and her elder brother.

Khulu is said to have tried to kill Dlamini by poisoning her early this month, but the domestic worker who was supposed to have put the poison in her food, did not have the heart to do so.

The Durban Commercial Crimes Unit received information about the plot and they alerted Dlamini, instructing her to play along in order to catch the perpetrators.

The three were remanded in custody until November 5 for bail application.
