Three killed after fleeing and firing at police

THREE gunned down, one still at large.

That was the fate of four men in Umhlathuzana township, Durban, on Thursday night after they opened fire on police.

The men had been ordered to stop by the police, who had become suspicious of their car.

Police spokesperson Captain Thulane Zwane said Durban Dog Unit officers and Malvern police had been on routine patrol in the Malvern area at around 8.30 pm on Thursday “when they spotted a suspicious motor vehicle with four men”.

According to Zwane, the men were ordered to stop, but sped off instead, paving the way for a high-speed chase and a fatal shootout.

“The police chased the motor vehicle and the suspects started to shoot at the police, who retaliated, fatally wounding three suspects.”

The three men killed in the havoc were aged between 19 to 25 years. They died at the scene, said Zwane.

“Police confiscated three unlicensed firearms with a total of 17 live rounds of ammunition.

“The fourth suspect fled on foot and is still at large,” Zwane said.

The incident comes in the wake of robberies at two homes in Treasure Beach on the Bluff, whose occupants were held up within minutes of each other on Thursday.

In one attack, a domestic worker was dragged down stairs by her hair and pistol-whipped.

In the other incident, four men forced their way into a home and pointed a gun at one of the occupants. The occupants were robbed of a cellphone, a TV and a watch.
