THREE men from Margate appeared in a Ramsgate court on a charge of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, after allegedly assaulting Zenzele Danca (20) at 3 am last Friday.

Jean Hogan (20), Henrico de Oliveira (18) and Dewaldt van Rensburg (21) pleaded not guilty to the charge and were each released on R1 000 bail.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Phumzile Makaula said Danca was walking in Marine Drive, Margate, with two women when the accused allegedly approached him from behind and began to assault him.

“The women said they hit him with their hands for no apparent reason,” said Makaula.

The women ran to get help and managed to flag down a patrolling policeman.

When the policeman arrived on the scene, he found Danca with serious injuries to his head and face. “The victim was lying in a pool of blood but was still conscious as he was able to identify himself,” said Makaula.

The officer called for assistance. The Port Shepstone K9 unit was in the vicinity and found three men running through the streets, whom they arrested. The case was postponed to April 11.

Selvan Chetty, a human rights activist with Solidarity Peace Trust, said the incident was unfortunate and that he trusted that the police would conduct a thorough investigation.

Margate also featured in the media last year after four men, Jakes Putter (33) , Petros Opperman (46), Douw van der Walt (33), and Gabriel Volschenk (49), allegedly fatally assaulted Lwandile Mampofu (26) after an altercation over a cigarette at the Lighthouse Pub and Grill on August 14. — Witness Reporter.
