NEW Year’s celebrations ended tragically when three people drowned at Kosi Bay in Zululand. This after thousands of people flocked to beaches in the iSimangaliso Wetland Park on New Year’s Day.

The victims who drowned were Nomvelo Malandela (12) of Thelizolo area, Sibonelo Sibiya (14) of Thengani area and Siphe Maphanga (14) of KwaMshudu area.

KZN Wildlife spokesperson Jeff Gaisford said all three bodies were recovered within hours.

“Three other young people were pulled from the water after getting into difficulties due to the incoming tide and they were taken to a hospital in Manguzi.

“Their names are Nhlakanipho Ndlovu (19), Noninbulo Ngubane (13) who is in a critical condition, and Sibe Khumalo (17),” said Gaisford.

There is also an unconfirmed report of a missing person. Gaisford said the report was very vague. “We are searching but we don’t have the name and facts,” he said.

To offer support and condolences, the staff of Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife and the iSimangaliso Wetland Authority have visited the induna of the area and the families of the victims who drowned.

The KZN MEC for Economic Development and Tourism, Mike Mabuyakhulu was hosted at Sodwana Bay by the CEO of iSimangaliso Wetland Park, Andrew Zaloumis.
