Thriller remake a must-see

Director Priyadarshan is noted for his comedy flicks, but this time round he makes a remake of the Malayalam psychological thriller Manichitrathazhu, which was also remade in Tamil and titled Chandramukhi. The Tamil version was a big hit, with superstar Rajnikant in the lead role.

Bhool Bhulaiyaa is based on a heritages havelis (ancestral mansion) set in the Rajasthan, with bad elements roaming around the mansion. Siddharth (Shiney Ahuja) returns from the U.S. with his wife Avni (Vidya Balan). The couple is warmly received by the extended family, which includes uncles Upadhyay (Paresh Rawal) and Badrinaryan (Manoj Joshi) and the adopted daughter Radha (Amisha Patel), who once harboured a secret love for Siddarth.

Tension builds up when the family resists Siddharth's request to stay in the family ancestral home, which is believed to be possessed and has a deadly secret that has continuously destroyed the family for generations. But Siddarth is adamant and moves in to the home.

The bad elements take control and life-threatening incidents swarm their paths. Siddharth immediately summons his friend Dr Aditya (Akshay Kumar), a psychiatrist who takes on the challenge of unraveling the bad elements roaming the mansion.

This is followed by mysterious elements, horrific indications, surprise, suspense and spirits.

Akshay Kumar, although only seen in the second half of the film, gives an incredible performance, but the film belongs to Vidya Balan with her mind-blowing performance. Shiney Ahuja gives an average performance. Amisha Patel does well in a substantial role and Paresh Rawal is impressive as usual.

Although the film tends to drag a bit, it is very glossy and stylish. A must-see suspense thriller. ***
