Thrills or sentiment

2008-02-01 00:00

THIS week's new films are Freedom Writers (Ster Kinekor and CineCentre), The Number 23 (CineCentre) and Ta Ra Rum Pum at Nu Metro where Shooters also joins the line-up. Namastey London continues in CineCentre's Sunday Bollywood slot.

• Richard LaGravenese directs Freedom Writers, which stars Hilary Swank, Imelda Staunton, Patrick Dempsey and Scott Glenn. The film is one in a long line of dramas about inspirational teachers who manage to turn around a tough, multi-ethnic class, this time set after the LA riots, during an outbreak of interracial gang warfare. It is an old idea, and lends itself to sentiment, but it can still work.

• The Number 23 is a mystery thriller directed by Joel Schumacher and starring Jim Carrey, Virginia Madsen, Logan Lerman and Danny Huston. Carrey plays a man who becomes obsessed by a novel his wife picks up in a second-hand shop. The title is The Number 23 and the author is “Topsy Krett”. (Try saying it, and you may get a clue.) The hero begins to feel the book is about his own life, and he sets out to find the author. Reviews have been lukewarm.

• Ta Ra Rum Pum is directed by Siddharth Anand and stars Saif Ali Khan and Rani Murherjee. Khan plays a New York-based racing driver whose life begins to unravel after a serious accident. Life had been easy, but now he has to struggle to keep his family afloat.
