‘Thumbies’ all the rage

2014-05-08 00:00

WITH the IEC banning “selfies” at yesterday’s polls, the latest buzzword born out of elections was the trending hashtag “#Thumbie”.

Catching on in the early hours of the morning, by the afternoon the hashtag ‘#Thumbie’ had been trending in South Africa and pictures of voters’ thumbs flooded social networks.

Celebrities, including TV personality Jeannie D and musicians Danny K and AKA, also cottoned on and posted images of their thumbs on Twitter and Instagram.

Some Twitter users went as far as to criticise others for not moisturising their hands before taking a “thumbie”.

Other hashtags such as #ElectionDay, #VotingDay, #ThumbsUp and #GetInked2014 also trended on social media throughout the day.
