Thumbs up: Local team to feature in ‘Vodacom Thumb Wars’

2009-07-25 00:00

MARITZBURG viewers can catch a local team in action in the next episode of Vodacom Thumb Wars. Maritzburg Movers are the stars of the show that airs next Thursday at 7.30 pm.

One-time Survivor hopeful Gavin Nesbitt (42) teams up with Andrew Hammond (24) in a race against the clock as they use their cellphones to complete a treasure hunt by deciphering clues sent to them via MMS, using search engines and satellite navigation programs on their complimentary Samsung M8800.

Each episode takes place in a different part of South Africa, and features four teams trying to solve the puzzles as the clock counts down from R1 million.

Nesbitt and Hammond entered the show almost a year ago via the Internet, and were overjoyed when they heard they would be participating.

“We were flabbergasted,” Nesbitt said, “I just thought, ‘Get out of here!’.”.

Hammond, originally from Ladysmith and now a Pietermaritzburg resident, said: “[The show] was pressured and frustrating — it’s not as easy as it looks.”

The two said they worked well as a team, with Nesbitt adding: “It gets frustrating, but we didn’t shout at each other, we kept cool. We didn’t get cross with each other once.”

Although the two were careful not to give anything about the show away, they described the highlight of the experience as being able to explore new parts of KZN.

“It was very fun being in front of the camera,” Hammond said, “But it was a long day.”
