2011-04-21 00:00

VISITORS and devotees of the annual fire-walking ceremony at the Siva Soobramoniar and Marriamen Temples in Langalibalele Street tomorrow will have an opportunity to deposit their family histories into a time capsule.

The time capsule was a project launched last year to commemorate the 150th anninversary of the arrival of indentured Indians in South Africa.

Umgungundlovu District Mayor Councillor Yusuf Bhamjee, the 1860 Legacy Foundation members of Pietermaritzburg and a team of volunteers will be present to encourage families to deposit their family histories.

The initiative is the start of a road show. Other venues to be visited by the team will be announced later.

The time capsule project was launched at Project Gateway on November 16 last year.

The time capsule is being left open for a year to allow members of the Indian community to deposit certified copies of authentic documents that will trace their origins and history.

On the November 16 this year the capsule will be sealed and will be reopened on November 16, 2060, marking the 200th anniversary of the contribution of the indentured Indians and Indian communities in general in helping to shape the heritage of South Africa.
