Time for a hero to step up — Kirsten

2011-12-29 00:00

COACH Gary Kirsten believes the Proteas did themselves a disservice with their first-innings performance and still have a lot of work ahead of them if they are to win the second Test.

But he insisted that the Proteas could not be counted out until the last ball had been bowled.

“This is a perfect opportunity for someone to step up and be a hero for their country. This is what we play cricket for and someone must step up. We have been in desperate situations before and survived; we can do it again.”

Kirsten said a major focus of the team over the past few months had been to improve the bowling, and not enough emphasis had been put on improving the batting. But he insisted that the side had the batsmen to do the job.

Kirsten said the bowlers had not stuck to the plan of attack.

“We had a plan overnight and we did not follow it until the third session of the day. It’s not a matter of not having a holding bowler, because what we want to do is bowl a pace bowler at one end throughout the match.”

The coach said Vernon Philander was recovering well and would be fit to play in the Newlands Test, which starts on January 3.

“We need to get early wickets tomorrow and to bat for long periods of time. That is the only way we are going to win this game,” he added.
